I have to be honest I’m a thrift shop lover, but I haven’t had any luck with the different types of ecom thrifty platforms.. is it just me?? I can not be alone in the process of feeling that high as you’re engulfed by the smells of the world of vintage that is speaking to you as you go through the racks and make connections with the many different lives that have come before you!!!
Excuse me “emerging brand” is the label! It’s not a filter setting but it’s often an edit that TRR offers, and it’s also a label that is on certain items (much like “editor’s pick” or “smart investment” 🙂↔️)
Lena, I know you hear this quite a lot but you really read my mind. I was thinking a few things over the past week as I read Famesick and rewatch Girls.
1 Lena never does ads and I bet she feels funny about doing them because of consumerism. If she ever did an ad, I would trust it and be likely to support that brand.
2. I love thrifting and I had the stray thought multiple times - I bet Hannah/Lena would like this. I’m not sure how close the personal style is between the two.
3. Girls and your books have made me more comfortable dressing like myself even if it isn’t how the people in my community dress. Valuing natural fibers over plastic has been a game changer.
1- There aren’t many aspects of my life or career where I can say I’ve made a “calculation” but I have always taken the relationship with audience/viewers very seriously- I’m lucky enough to have people who take my thoughts seriously in return, but that means I have a duty not to lead them astray. But @therealreal is something I’ve have a very special relationship with for a long time (I did a closet sale of pieces from the Girls days for Planned Parenthood with them a decade ago) and that’s brought so much pleasure and color to my life. It’s also been a way to feel a bit more responsible and engaged with how I consume. So it was the first time collaborating felt natural, and I loved that they were just encouraging me to talk about what fashion and style mean to me, not feeding me universal talking points. I may not have waited to lose my virginity to the man of my dreams, but this first is with the *one*;)
2- Lena loves to thrift and Hannah for sure did/does (lots of her best pieces were secondhand. Maybe third.)
3- Nothing could make me happier. May I recommend keeping a TRR searches open for Lauren Manoogian, Brooke Callahan, Donni, Jesse Kamm? All cool independent female designers who use natural fibers…
I haven’t shopped at the real real but I have discovered a new found interest in style and a desire to curate a look for myself. At 49. It’s feels amazing. Fun read!
I remember all the used clothing stores on Broadway in SoHo from the early - mid '90s, and haunting the National Council for Jewish Women thrift shop in my town on Long Island. No one else from my high school was going in there! But TRR has been good to me, too, both as a buyer and seller. Stalking the items is definitely half the fun.
As usual, hilarious. Hopefully your next post will be about pig care!
I LOVE THIS your fashion commentary is to die for
This is bloody great.
So good. Great job Lena.
Feeling less shame about the number of TRR Obsessions I have. Merci!
We call them “obsesshes” and my mother and I schedule time to sit down and compare regularly
I can see the pleasure in that. Though only if there was no risk she could easily snag the sandals I wanted.

I get this SO much - it took me awhile to feel the spirit through the web, but now I do I really do
UNIQUE THRIFT. You have evoked a core memory. Thrift and record shopping was so good in Cleveland back then (and probably still is.)
Maybe one of the only good things about going to college in Ohio.
Beautiful work
lovely post and also obsessed w TRR, but question… WHERE is the ‘emerging designers’ section? I don’t see it as a filter…

dream team
Godmother of the form - it’s like how Nora Ephron invented the comic listicle
Earl jeans! I was obsessed and they were SO expensive.

Thank you!

Thank you so much - I have so much respect and love for how you move through the world. I will check out those brands!
Soooo correct
The queen herself 🥰🥰🥰

loveeee the real real!! just wish the import tax wasn't so crazy for getting stuff to london
The import/export situation is getting dark. There’s a specific gloom falling over the resale addicts..:
The HMRC would find a way to remove the whimsy from sustainable shopping/finding a good deal!
